Channels and cameras — what's the difference?
Think of channels as how many cameras the recorder will take, and cameras as the number you actually get. The recorders here have between 4 and 32 channels. With spare channels, you can add cameras later and keep the same recorder.

A 5MP kit pairs a recorder (DVR) with a matched set of 5-megapixel cameras, so channel count, camera count and hard drive size are already specified together — no separate compatibility checking needed. This range runs from 4-channel to 16-channel systems, with turret and bullet cameras, and drive capacities from 6TB to 10TB.
How to choose
- Channel count — match to the number of cameras you actually need now; a 16-channel recorder with 8 cameras leaves room to add more later.
- Camera style — turret cameras are compact and dome-shaped; bullet cameras are cylindrical and often favoured for a visible, longer-range look. Some kits mix both.
- Night vision type — standard IR turrets give monochrome night footage, while PIR-equipped models (marked PIRXO) add passive infrared motion sensing for smarter alerts.
- Storage size — larger drives (8TB, 10TB) hold more recorded footage before older clips are overwritten, useful with more cameras or longer retention needs.
- Recorder model — kits use specific Hikvision recorder models (e.g. IDS-7208HQHI, IDS-7208HUHI-M1/E), which determine channel capacity and camera compatibility within that kit.
