5MP Kits: your questions answered
How many days of footage do kits in this range keep?
It comes down to three things: the size of the drive, how many cameras are recording and their resolution. As a rough guide, if just one camera is recording non-stop, every terabyte gives you around 46 days of 5MP footage or around 23 days of 4K footage. On a typical kit here, it's about 57 days. Each kit's card shows its own estimate — and if you only record when something moves, footage lasts longer.
Channels and cameras — what's the difference?
Think of channels as how many cameras the recorder will take, and cameras as the number you actually get. The recorders here have between 4 and 32 channels. With spare channels, you can add cameras later and keep the same recorder.
What's in the box?
A recorder (an NVR on IP kits or a DVR on Turbo HD ones) plus matching cameras, checked to work together. Every kit here comes with a hard drive. Every part, with its model number, is listed on each kit's own page.
How much do kits in this range cost?
Prices for the in-stock kits here go from £165.92 to £4,902.35 including VAT. The figure on each card is what that kit costs.
5MP CCTV kits: complete systems, ready to record
A 5MP kit pairs a recorder (DVR or NVR) with two 5-megapixel cameras and a hard drive, so you get a working system rather than separate parts to match up yourself. 5MP sits above 1080p (2MP) for sharper detail on faces and number plates, useful over driveways, gardens, and shopfronts.
Kits here use either DVR recorders (for analogue-style HD cameras, connected by coax cable) or NVR recorders (for PoE IP cameras, connected by network cable, which also carries power). Check which cabling you're planning around before choosing.
How to choose
- Channel count: 4-channel recorders suit small homes; 8-channel units leave room to add cameras later.
- Recorder type: DVR kits here use coax-connected cameras (e.g. DS-2CE76H0T-ITMFS); NVR kits use PoE IP cameras (e.g. DS-2CD1053G0-IUF) over a single network cable.
- Storage: kits are supplied with either a 4TB or 6TB hard drive pre-fitted, which determines how many days of footage you can keep before older recordings are overwritten.
- Camera model: turret, dome and bullet-style 5MP cameras appear across kits, each suited to slightly different mounting spots and viewing angles.
Every kit includes two cameras as standard, so larger properties may need more than one kit or additional cameras.
