Count channels for the system you will grow into, not the one you are fitting today — an 8-channel NVR running four cameras costs little more than a 4-channel at its limit, and re-boxing a recorder later costs a site visit. Check the PoE budget as well as the port count: eight ports that share 80W will not run eight high-draw cameras with IR at full distance.

Hikvision NVRs support ONVIF, so most mainstream IP cameras will record — but brand-specific features (AcuSense events, smart search) work fully only with Hikvision cameras.
What hard drive does a Hikvision NVR take?
