How to cover a farm with CCTV

A farm is not a building, it is three hundred metres of yard with buildings round the edge, and that single fact drives the design. Copper Ethernet is a 100 m channel; past that a standard PoE camera will not come up at all. There are three honest answers: a long-range PoE switch — the Hikvision nine-port we stock reaches 300 m in extend mode, but the port drops from 100 Mbps to 10 Mbps when you enable it, which is enough for one 4 MP camera on H.265 and not enough for 4K or a multi-sensor — fibre to the far building, or a second recorder in the barn feeding the same app.

Views, in the order things actually get stolen: the road gate, the machinery shed where the quad, the ATV and the GPS domes live, the fuel tank, the chemical and vet store, the grain store, and the farmhouse approach. Eight cameras covers a single-yard holding; sixteen is normal once there are outlying buildings.

Power is the constraint people discover last. There is no socket at the far gate, so either run PoE from the nearest building inside the switch's budget or take a fused spur out and use a local injector. Check the volt drop first — a long run on thin cable is why a camera reboots every night at the moment the infrared cuts in. Note that a switch's total budget, not its port count, is the real limit: the nine-port above is rated 30 W per port with a 60 W PoE budget across the whole switch. (65 W is the switch's own maximum consumption, not what is available to cameras — a distinction worth getting right before you hang eight IR turrets off it.)

Night on a farm is not night in a car park. Set AcuSense-class human and vehicle classification or you will collect three hundred recordings of moths on the lens and a cat on a wall, and you will stop opening the app inside a week. At the gate, ColorVu or Smart Hybrid Light pays for itself, because a vehicle colour in a statement is worth more than a grey shape.

Environment: IP66 AND IP67 by the wash-down and the sprayer fill point — jetting and immersion are separate tests, so specify both rather than treating 67 as the upgrade — and coated or stainless brackets in livestock buildings, where ammonia will eat a standard housing in a season. And if the broadband is four megabits up, do not expect four 4K streams to leave the farm — record locally, view one stream at a time, or put a 4G router on the recorder.
