An NVR (network video recorder) records digital streams from IP cameras over your network, and for a multi-site business the right choice is one sized to each site type rather than a single estate-wide spec. Buy the next channel tier up from today's camera count (our range runs 4, 8, 16 and 32 channels), and check PoE ports separately, because the 32-channel 1.5U model has 24 PoE ports, not one per channel. Set retention per site, then manage the estate through a central tool whose data handling you've checked against UK GDPR.
How many channels does an NVR CCTV system need at each type of site?
Buy the next channel tier up from today's camera count: 4-ch or 8-ch for a home, 8-ch or 16-ch for a shop. Our NVR category runs 4, 8, 16 and 32 channels, and the 32-ch 1.5U model has 24 PoE ports. Headroom therefore means jumping a tier, not filling every channel.
The sizing below is general guidance, not a standard:
- Single home: 4-ch or 8-ch. The Hikvision 8-ch PoE NVR has 8 built-in PoE ports, which suits a house that may add a side-gate or garage camera later.
- Small shop: 8-ch or 16-ch, covering the till, stockroom, entrance and rear. If you start with five or six cameras, 8-ch leaves room; beyond that, the Hikvision 16-ch PoE NVR is the next step.
- Multi-branch estate (retail chain, letting-agency portfolio): one standard 8-ch or 16-ch per branch. Reserve a 32-ch for a flagship site only. Cameras beyond the 24 PoE ports would need power another way, such as a PoE switch.
Channels are not the whole limit. The Uniview NVR504-16B-IQ datasheet shows decoding falling from 16 × 1080p@30 to 4 × 4K@30 with Smart Off, and to 12 × 1080p@30 and 2 × 4K@30 with Smart On. Live view and playback capacity shrink as resolution rises, so a 16-ch recorder full of 4K cameras may not display them all at once.
For an estate, standardising on one recorder model per branch size means staff learn a single menu and export routine. It also keeps decoding limits predictable, because each branch's load stays within its own recorder.
How should PoE ports and bandwidth be planned per site?
Count cameras against PoE ports first, then test their combined bitrate against the NVR's incoming bandwidth. Either limit can run out before the channel count does.
Built-in PoE recorders show how the two figures differ by model:
- Hikvision 8-ch PoE NVR 8K: 8 PoE ports and 128 Mbps incoming bandwidth.
- Hikvision 16-ch PoE NVR with 8K decoding: 16 PoE ports and 256 Mbps.
- Hikvision 16 Channel PoE NVR – No PoE Switch Needed: 16 PoE ports, with cameras up to 6MP.
Channel count and port count don't always match. Our Hikvision 32-ch 1.5U 24 PoE 8K model has 32 channels but 24 PoE ports, so the last eight cameras would need a separate PoE switch.
The bandwidth check
Use this formula, with the bitrate taken from each camera's datasheet at the stream settings you intend to run:
number of cameras × per-camera bitrate must stay below the NVR's incoming bandwidth, with headroom left over.
Mixed sites need each camera's own bitrate added up rather than one average. A switch in the middle doesn't help, because every stream still ends up at the recorder.
Check the NVR datasheet for the total PoE power budget too. The port count alone doesn't show whether the recorder can power every camera at once, and cameras with IR or motorised lenses draw more than basic turrets.
What retention period should each site use under UK GDPR?
Set each site's retention from its purpose and risk, and write down why; to our knowledge the ICO sets no fixed number of days. Its CCTV guidance expects footage to be kept no longer than necessary for the stated purpose. Check the current ICO wording before you finalise a policy, as guidance gets updated.
- Home: a short overwrite loop usually covers the purpose, which is noticing an incident within a few days of it happening.
- Shop handling cash: a longer period can be justified, because disputes, till discrepancies and insurance claims often surface late. Record that reasoning.
- Letting agency with shared-entrance cameras: footage captures residents and visitors, so the rationale needs to be documented. Note who can view it and when a clip is exported and kept beyond the loop.
The storage side is a formula, not a guess: cameras × bitrate × retention time. Work it through with your own camera bitrates using our Hard Drive Size Guide rather than a rule of thumb.
The recorder sets the ceiling. The Hikvision 16 Channel PoE NVR, for example, is listed with up to 12TB of storage. If your maths asks for more than a recorder can hold, lower the bitrate, cut the retention or choose a different model.
Fit surveillance-rated drives, which are designed for continuous recording. Our Surveillance Hard Drives article covers the options.
How do you roll out and buy NVRs across several sites?
Standardise on one or two NVR models across every site, so firmware, spares and staff training stay identical wherever a recorder fails. Pick the tier by site size, then keep to it.
- Homes and small units: the Hikvision 8-ch PoE NVR 8K has 8 built-in PoE ports and 128 Mbps bandwidth, so cameras plug straight in with no separate switch.
- Shops and branches: the Hikvision 16 Channel PoE NVR has 16 built-in PoE ports and takes cameras up to 6MP, with up to 12TB of storage.
- Sites planning 12MP cameras: the ANNKE 16-Ch 12MP PoE NVR also has 16 PoE ports. The trade-off is a second brand's firmware and menus to support alongside Hikvision.
- Mixed-brand estates: the Prolux 16 Channel NVR offers 160 Mbps incoming bandwidth, ONVIF and mixed-brand camera support.
ONVIF helps when cameras from different makers must share one recorder. Brand-specific features such as AI search or smart event filtering may not carry across, so check the recorder's datasheet against the cameras you intend to use.
Your own electrician or installer fits the kit at each site, working from the datasheet and installation guide. For multi-site orders, ask about trade pricing at CCTV Master.
How do you manage several NVRs remotely in 2026?
Choose the lightest tool that still gives central access, an audit trail and controlled retention. Per-NVR apps suit a handful of sites, a manufacturer's central client suits a mid-size estate on one brand, and a VMS server suits larger estates.
| Option | Best for | Trade-offs | UK GDPR note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per-NVR manufacturer app | 1-5 small sites | Logins and updates are managed site by site | Shared logins make it hard to show who viewed what, so use named accounts |
| Manufacturer central client software | Mid-size estates on one brand | Brand lock-in; features vary by product | Check that it supports per-user permissions and keeps activity logs |
| Cloud firmware and upgrade services | Patch discipline | Convenient, but confirm what the service needs from each recorder | Check where any account or device data is held |
| VMS server | Larger or mixed estates | A server to maintain, plus licensing and setup time | Central user rights and retention settings are easier to evidence |
Whichever you pick, the legal duties stay with you as the data controller. The ICO's CCTV guidance expects a defined purpose, restricted access and a justified retention period. A tool that cannot show who logged in, or that leaves retention to each site's default, makes those duties harder to meet.
Standardising on one recorder model also helps. A 16-channel unit such as the Hikvision 16 Channel PoE NVR has 16 built-in PoE ports, so every site is configured, patched and documented the same way.
