On this page

The best PTZ CCTV camera in the UK depends on the job: a long-range Hikvision or Dahua-class model suits a site or perimeter, while a budget PTZ suits a short, well-lit run such as a yard, shopfront or car park. Live VAT-inclusive price, stock and warranty on each product page should settle the final pick. Before you compare features, check your PoE power budget and cable run, because those limits rule models out sooner than zoom or tracking specs do.

What is the best PTZ CCTV camera in the UK for your budget?

Under £300 suits a DIY yard or shopfront, £300-£800 a small-business car park, and £800+ a construction site or perimeter. These are planning bands, not product prices. Live VAT-inclusive prices are on each product page. Whether a PTZ beats fixed cameras for your site is a separate decision, covered in our PTZ buyer's guide.

Under £300: DIY yard or shopfront

Shop for modest optical zoom, enough to read a gate or doorway rather than a whole lot. A short IR claim is acceptable here because the subject is close and usually lit. Look for an outdoor rating of around IP66, a microSD slot as a fallback recording, and the PoE class stated on the datasheet. Some PTZ units with IR and a motor draw more than basic PoE supplies.

£300-£800: small-business car park

Look for mid-range optical zoom, so you can pull a number plate or face from the far bay, and an IR claim you treat as a best-case ceiling when choosing a night vision CCTV camera. Measure the distance to your farthest bay and compare it with the datasheet figure. Budget for PoE+ (802.3at, 30 W) per camera on the switch. For a CCTV camera system for business, confirm the recorder supports PTZ control. Keep each CCTV camera cable run within the 100 m Ethernet limit.

£800+: construction site or perimeter

For a CCTV camera for a construction site or a long fence line, shop for high optical zoom, long-range IR, IP66 or better, and local storage so footage survives a dropped network link. Check the datasheet for power needs, as high-end PTZs may need more than standard PoE+. This band also brings analytics claims into play.

Hikvision's UK page claims DeepinViewX detection up to 400 m and 90%+ fewer false alarms, "compared to conventional AI cameras in lab testing". That is a manufacturer claim and we have not verified it independently. Judge it on your own scene, lighting and distances.

Dahua, Hikvision or a budget brand: buy this if, skip this if

Choose by what you can verify: recorder compatibility, ONVIF support, the datasheet's feature list and the warranty terms on the product page matter more than the badge.

Hikvision

  • Buy if you want its analytics and a wide UK-facing range, and your recorder is already Hikvision or confirmed compatible.
  • Skip if your recorder is another brand and you haven't checked compatibility. ONVIF support on the datasheet is the minimum to look for, but it doesn't guarantee that PTZ control and presets will work.

Dahua

  • Buy if your existing NVR or ecosystem is Dahua, the datasheet lists the features you need, and the product page states warranty and support terms you're happy with.
  • Skip if you're mixing it with a recorder from elsewhere without confirming ONVIF support and PTZ control first.
  • Buy for short, low-risk runs, such as a yard, a car park or a small unit, where you aren't relying on identifying faces or plates at distance.
  • Skip for long-range identification work. This is general guidance, not a head-to-head test.

Recorder choice and analogue PTZ compatibility are covered in our PTZ buyer's guide. For brand-by-brand detail, use our Hikvision-vs-Dahua comparison and the Hikvision series guide rather than relying on this summary.

How do you read a PTZ spec sheet without being misled?

Treat every headline figure as a best-case ceiling, then work out how many pixels land on the subject at your real distance. The example below is a long-range spec class, not a product recommendation: 4MP, 25× optical zoom, 4.8-120 mm lens, IR "up to 100 m", IP66, microSD up to 256 GB.

IR range is a rating, not an identification distance

"Up to 100 m" describes how far the illuminator throws light. It says nothing about how far you can identify a face. To size the job, use the pixel-density approach in BS EN 62676-4 (general guidance): roughly 25 pixels per metre to detect, 62 to observe, 125 to recognise and 250 to identify.

A 4MP image is typically around 2560 pixels wide, so identification needs the scene at the subject's distance to be about 10 m wide or less (2560 ÷ 250). The scene width is 2 × distance × tan(half the horizontal field of view), and the datasheet gives that angle for each focal length. For IR versus ColorVu in the dark, see our night-vision CCTV guide.

Optical versus digital zoom

The 25× optical figure is the real lens travelling from 4.8 mm to 120 mm. The 16× digital figure only crops and enlarges the same 4MP image, so it adds no detail and should play no part in your sizing.

Zooming in also narrows the view. At 120 mm the camera sees a thin slice of the site, so sweeping a wide area and identifying a face are two separate jobs. Use a wide preset for watching and zoomed presets for the points where identification matters, or put a fixed camera on the entrance.

Fallback recording and parked presets

A microSD slot, up to 256 GB here, keeps recording locally if the network or recorder drops out. Treat it as a safety net rather than a replacement for an NVR, and use a card rated for continuous recording.

A PTZ only records what it is pointing at. If it is left parked on a zoomed preset, it misses everything outside that frame. Check the manual for a park or home-position setting that returns it to a wide view after a set idle time.

What PoE budget and cable run does a PTZ camera need?

Budget for the PTZ's own datasheet draw plus headroom, not a fixed-camera figure, and keep each Ethernet run within 100 m on Cat6.

Power budget

A pan-tilt-zoom head has motors, and outdoor models often add IR and a heater, so a PTZ can draw more than a fixed camera on the same switch port. Read the stated consumption and the PoE class on the datasheet, then check it against the port's IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at or 802.3bt rating as general guidance. A port that suits a fixed dome may not suit a PTZ.

The sum is simple, and you fill in the figures from your own datasheets:

switch PoE budget ≥ (sum of each camera's datasheet draw) + headroom

Use the switch's total PoE budget, not just its per-port rating. Our PoE switch sizing guide for 8 cameras works through a full switch.

Cable run

Ethernet is generally limited to 100 m per run. Cat6 is the better choice over Cat5e for new PTZ runs, and our Cat6 spec guide covers the details. If you're reusing an existing run, read the external Cat5e guide first. For any cable that leaves the building, buy outdoor-rated CCTV camera cable, as indoor wire degrades outside.

Brackets and mounts

A PTZ is heavier than a fixed camera, so a flimsy camera bracket is a poor match. Check the mount's load rating against the camera's weight, and confirm it fits your wall or pole. Then list the camera parts that complete the job, such as a junction box, which the camera's datasheet or installation guide will name. Fitting is done by your own electrician or an independent installer.

What should you check before ordering in the UK?

Check live availability, the dispatch and returns terms, the warranty wording, power and recorder compatibility, and who will fit the camera.

Availability. Stock and back-order status are shown live on each product page. A back-order item can be requested by quote or delivery arrangement, so read the page rather than assuming.

Dispatch and returns. In-stock items ordered before 4pm, Monday to Friday, are dispatched the same working day. Later orders go the next working day. Delivery is £5.99 per order, free from £100.00, and the delivery page covers the rest. You have 14 days to change your mind and 30 days to reject faulty goods.

Warranty and support. Read the warranty terms on the product page itself, as they differ by product. Confirm the model suits UK mains and a UK recorder. Check how the PTZ head is powered, whether PoE or a separate supply. Also check that your recorder can control PTZ models before you buy.

Fitting. CCTV Master sells equipment only and does not install it. Use your own electrician or an independent NSI or SSAIB installer, and ask to see their accreditation. Whoever fits it should work from the datasheet or installation guide for that model, particularly for mounting and power.

Frequently asked questions

What is a PTZ CCTV camera?

A PTZ camera pans, tilts and zooms using a motorised head and an optical zoom lens, so one unit can cover ground that would otherwise need several fixed cameras. Datasheets typically list 360° continuous pan, tilt up to 90°, and preset positions or patrol patterns for automated monitoring.

Are PTZ cameras any good?

Yes, when the job suits them. They work well on large commercial properties, perimeters and industrial sites where one camera must cover a wide area and zoom in on detail. They are often misapplied, though: a PTZ only records where it is pointed, so a doorway needing constant coverage is better served by a fixed camera.

Which type of CCTV camera is best?

No single type wins everywhere. A long-range Hikvision or Dahua PTZ suits a site or perimeter, while a budget PTZ suits a short, well-lit run. Check the live price, stock and warranty on each product page before choosing, because those decide the final pick.

How to select CCTV camera for home?

Start with the distance to cover, the lighting and the cable and power you already have. Power and cable limits, such as PoE supply and Cat6 run length, rule models out sooner than features do. Also check for privacy masking, so you can block out neighbouring property from the view.

What should I check before buying a PTZ in the UK?

Confirm your recorder or switch has enough PoE budget, that your Cat6 run suits the camera, and that privacy masking is supported. Use the bands as a guide: under £300 DIY, £300–£800 small business, £800+ site or perimeter. These are planning bands, not product prices, so check VAT-inclusive prices on each product page.
