Either brand is a sound buy for a typical small UK business such as a shop, office or warehouse, because neither is barred from private-sector use. The exception is if you supply government or public bodies, or bid for tenders. Since 2022 the UK government has kept Chinese-made cameras off its sensitive sites, so check your contract wording before you buy. Otherwise, choose on who will install, support and update the system and on cost per working camera (camera, recorder, storage and install), not on spec-sheet wins.
Is it safe for a small UK business to buy Hikvision or Dahua?
For a shop, office or warehouse that is not a government site, neither brand is barred, so choosing between them is a sourcing decision rather than a legal one.
Both are China-based manufacturers, and SEG's system comparison lists each as a recorder-on-site system with no compulsory ongoing cost that usually suits price-led installs. That helps explain why one or both commonly turn up on small-business quotes.
The restriction people half-remember is real but narrow. Since 2022 the UK government has kept Chinese-made cameras off its sensitive sites, but the UK buyer's guide "Top 10 CCTV Camera Brands in 2026" notes that for homes and shops, how the system is set up and updated matters far more. Changing default passwords and keeping recorder and camera firmware current does more for you than the badge on the camera.
When the exception applies
Check the paperwork before you buy if any of these describe you:
- You supply public bodies directly.
- You bid for tenders that include security or procurement conditions.
- You sit inside a regulated supply chain.
In those cases the contract wording overrides what is freely sold. Ask the client what equipment their terms permit, in writing. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
Who supports the warranty and firmware after you buy?
In most cases your UK seller handles a warranty claim, not the manufacturer's factory. Whichever brand you choose, the retailer you bought from is normally your first point of contact.
Keep the invoice and a record of every serial number, and ask any supplier how faulty-unit returns work before you order. At CCTV Master you have 30 days to reject faulty goods and 14 days to change your mind on a distance sale.
Firmware
As general guidance, download firmware only from the manufacturer's official support channel, never from forums or shared links. Check the release date, and note the version number before and after the update so you can roll back or report a fault accurately.
Installer support
Both brands are widely fitted by UK installers, so a local installer who knows the brand you've bought matters more than the logo. We sell the equipment and do not install it. For fitting, use an independent installer accredited by NSI or SSAIB.
What we can't tell you
Nothing in our research ranks Hikvision against Dahua on UK warranty turnaround or firmware support. Ask your supplier and your installer how they handle both before you commit.
How do Hikvision and Dahua handle remote access and user accounts?
Both brands' recorders offer remote viewing through a mobile app and a PC client, so how you configure the recorder matters more than the badge on it.
Dahua's XVR datasheet confirms both routes for that unit. No sourced head-to-head comparison of the two apps exists, so I won't rank them.
What to test before you buy
- Forced password creation at activation, rather than a shared factory default.
- Separate user accounts with limited rights.
- An audit log showing who logged in and what changed.
- Remote access that works without port forwarding.
The last point is general cyber-hygiene guidance in the NCSC vein, not a brand claim. Forwarding ports on the router exposes the recorder directly to the internet. Check the manual or datasheet for the exact model you're considering.
Setting up accounts for a small business
- Owner: the admin account, with its password stored somewhere safe.
- Staff: view-only accounts, with playback or export switched off where the recorder allows it.
- Installer: a time-limited account, disabled or deleted once the job is signed off.
Never share one login. If everyone signs in as admin, the audit log can't tell you who exported a clip or changed a setting.
What does a working camera really cost: licences, PoE and storage?
A working camera costs its own price plus a share of the recorder, hard drive, switch port and any licence, with its own cable and fittings added on top.
Cost per working camera =
P_camera + P_cable_fittings
+ (P_recorder + P_drive + P_switch + P_licence) ÷ N_cameras
P_camera and P_cable_fittings are for one camera and its run. The shared items in brackets are system totals, divided once by the number of cameras. Fill each P with the live price on the product page. Fitting labour sits outside the formula, because your own accredited installer quotes that separately.
Licences
The SEG comparison table lists both Hikvision and Dahua as recording to an on-site recorder (NVR) with no compulsory ongoing cost. So P_licence is normally zero unless you add an optional cloud service, which is priced separately. Check for one before you order.
PoE check
Add up the stated draw of every camera, then keep headroom under the switch's total PoE budget. That budget can be lower than the port count suggests, so read the budget figure, not just the number of ports.
On each camera's datasheet, check the PoE standard it supports, whether it also offers 12V DC, its IP rating and its compression codec. Those details vary by model, so confirm them on the exact camera you intend to buy. A 12V DC camera without PoE needs a power supply per camera, which adds to P_cable_fittings.
Compression affects storage. Retention needs roughly bitrate × 86,400 seconds × days × cameras, divided by 8 for bytes. Where a model supports an efficient codec such as H.265+, a lower bitrate can shrink the hard drive you need, and so the P_drive share.
Buy Dahua if, buy Hikvision if: a decision rule and checklist
Choose Hikvision for deeper analytics and low-light features, Dahua when price per channel drives the job, and neither if your contracts exclude both.
Hikvision suits you if you want AcuSense or ColorVu, already run Hikvision, or your installer knows the platform well. One commercial installer's comparison credits it with sharper images and more analytics depth.
Dahua suits you if the budget is spread across many channels, as on a larger warehouse or yard, or if you are reusing coax through a hybrid recorder. The same installer reports that Dahua often wins on price per channel.
Consider other brands if a client, insurer or tender excludes both. The UK government has kept Chinese-made cameras off its sensitive sites since 2022, and some commercial contracts follow that lead.
Pre-purchase checklist
- The datasheet states the PoE standard, IP rating and codec, so Hikvision PoE cameras and Dahua models can be compared like for like.
- The recorder's total PoE budget covers every camera. Add up each datasheet's maximum draw and compare it with the NVR's figure.
- You know the firmware source and how updates will be applied.
- Every device is activated with its own strong password, with no defaults left and remote access limited to what you need.
- Your customer, insurer and tender documents do not bar either brand.
- For a CCTV camera system for business that captures people, you have a retention period, signage and a documented purpose, in line with UK GDPR and the ICO's CCTV guidance.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe for a small UK business to buy Hikvision or Dahua cameras?
For a shop, office or warehouse that is not a government site, neither brand is barred. Sourcing is a policy question, not a legal one. Since 2022 the UK government has kept Chinese-made cameras off sensitive sites, so if you supply public bodies or bid for tenders, check the contract wording before buying.
What cctv system should i buy?
For most small businesses, a recorder-based IP system from one brand keeps cameras, recorder and updates consistent. Choose the brand your installer can support and keep updated, rather than chasing spec-sheet wins. If you want a second opinion on your layout, call us on +44 20 8153 4657 during opening hours (Mon–Fri 09:00–17:00, Sat 09:00–14:00).
Where can i buy hikvision cameras at wholesale prices?
CCTV Master sells installer-grade kit at public prices, and trade pricing is available on request. Ask by phone on +44 20 8153 4657 or by email at Sales@cctvmaster.co.uk. We can't promise a particular discount, as trade pricing depends on what you are buying.
Where to buy Hikvision cameras?
CCTV Master sells Hikvision and Dahua, alongside Annke, Tiandy and TP-Link VIGI, and stock and back-order status are shown live on each product page. In-stock items ordered before 4pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same working day; orders after the cut-off or at the weekend go the next working day. You can also see the kit in person at Quill St, Hanger Ln, London, W5 1DN, open Mon–Fri 09:00–17:00 and Sat 09:00–14:00.
Hikvision or Dahua: which should a small business choose?
Neither is a universal winner. Decide on who will install and update the system, whether you serve public-sector customers, and the cost per working camera, not on individual spec-sheet differences. Buy the recorder, storage and PoE capacity with the cameras, and have fitting quoted separately by an independent accredited installer (NSI or SSAIB) of your choosing, as we sell the equipment but do not install it.
