A camera that has gone dark leaves you guessing: camera, cable or recorder? The Rsrteng IPC-5100C Plus (SKU CCTV-Tester-IPC-5100-Plus), sold as a 5.4" CCTV Camera Tester – IP, TVI, CVI, AHD & CVBS, is a handheld monitor that lets you check the camera on its own before you blame anything else.
What it does
- Camera types: IP, plus analogue TVI, CVI, AHD and CVBS. TVI, CVI and AHD are high-definition video over coax cable; CVBS is the older plain composite analogue signal.
- Screen: a 5.4-inch colour display showing the live picture.
- PoE output: Power over Ethernet sends power down the network cable, so a compatible IP camera can run from the tester with no switch involved.
- Cable tracer: helps identify and test network or CCTV cabling.
- Outputs: HDMI and VGA for an external monitor.
Before you buy
Work out what you are testing. If your site has IP cameras, coax cameras, or a mix, this one tester covers both. It does not replace the camera, cable or recorder, so you will still need the right lead for the camera, and a monitor with an HDMI or VGA input if you want a bigger view. Check that your IP camera's power needs suit PoE.
If a camera flickers or goes black after dark, a weak power supply or a long cable run is a common cause, because the infrared LEDs draw more power at night. Trying the camera on a short lead away from the long run is a quick way to see whether power is the problem.
