Choosing the right cabinet or enclosure comes down to three decisions, in this order: match the IP rating to where it's going (indoors, outdoors, exposed to weather), size the internal dimensions to everything you're fitting inside — not just the NVR — and get ventilation right.
Heat build-up is a common cause of reliability problems in enclosed cabinets, so airflow matters as much as U-size. Get these three decisions right and mounting style, U-size and lock type are the easy part.

Location decides the cabinet, not U-size: indoor comms rooms and offices can use a standard vented steel cabinet, while any outdoor, unheated or exposed position needs a sealed, weather-rated enclosure instead. Get this split right before you look at a single spec sheet.
Inside a plant room, office cupboard or dry loft space, the constraints are cost and physical space rather than moisture. A ventilated 19-inch cabinet with a lockable steel door, like the 12U-350 Server Rack Data Network Cabinet at 600mm (W) × 350mm (D) × 640mm (H), does the job at this end of the range. 15U and 18U options are available where you need more rack space or deeper cable management.
None of these are designed to keep rain, condensation or dust ingress out. They rely on a dry, temperature-stable room around them.
Outdoors, on a pole, external wall or anywhere exposed to weather, that same vented cabinet is the wrong choice regardless of how much U-space it offers. You need a sealed, IP-rated enclosure built for the elements — a different product category from the wall-mount comms cabinets stocked in this range, not just a tougher finish on the same design.
Decide the cabinet after, not before, the recorder and switch choices. Cabinet sizing only makes sense once you know what has to fit inside it: check your NVR's depth and drive bays and your PoE switch's port count and rack width first, then use those figures to set the U-size and depth you shop for here.

How do you size a cabinet for an NVR, PoE switch, UPS and patch panel together?
Add up the U-height of every item first, then pick a cabinet with headroom — that single sum is what stops you sending a cabinet back. Work in U, the standard rack unit of 44.45mm.
A typical build of a 2U NVR, a 1U PoE switch, a 1U patch panel and a small 2U UPS comes to 6U of equipment. A 12U or 15U cabinet leaves room for cabling, a shelf and future expansion rather than a tight squeeze.
Depth is the figure buyers overlook most often. A 350mm-deep cabinet suits a shallow NVR and a slim switch, but many NVR power supplies and most UPS units need 450mm or more of internal clearance to close the door without crushing cables. Our own 12U-350 cabinet (600×350×640mm) is fine for a switch and patch panel, but tight if a UPS is added later. Check your own NVR and PoE switch specifications — depth, bay count and power draw — before settling on a cabinet size.

What IP rating does a CCTV cabinet actually need?
An IP rating only becomes relevant once a cabinet sits outside the building envelope, or inside a wet or dusty plant space — a normal indoor comms cupboard doesn't need one at all. If the cabinet lives in a server room, a store cupboard or an internal riser, it's sheltered from rain, hosepipe washdown and airborne dust ingress. The wall-mount steel cabinets most installers spec for CCTV control kit are built for exactly that environment rather than for a pole or an external wall.
The IP (Ingress Protection) code is two digits: the first covers protection against solid objects and dust, the second covers water ingress. Higher numbers mean better sealing in both cases, so it's worth reading both digits on a manufacturer's datasheet rather than skimming the overall "IP rating" as one figure — a cabinet can be well-sealed against dust but poorly sealed against jetting water, or vice versa.

How do you stop a locked cabinet cooking the equipment inside it?
Leave clearance around the hottest device and keep vents clear: a locked, closed door with no airflow path can shorten the life of an NVR or switch once it's cooking inside a warm enclosure. Locking a cabinet solves theft and tamper risk, but heat build-up is a separate problem you have to design for. Practical steps that actually help
- Don't pack the cabinet to its full U-count with no gaps. A 12U-350 cabinet (600mm W × 350mm D × 640mm H) or a 15U 350mm-depth unit (600mm W × 350mm D × 770mm H) both cool better with a spare U or two left free around the hottest device.
- Route cables to keep the front vents clear. Patch leads and power cables bunched across a vented door panel block the exact airflow path the ventilation was designed for.
- Site the cabinet away from direct sun or a warm south-facing wall. Even indoors, a cabinet mounted above a boiler or in a loft space runs hotter than one in a cool utility area.
When to add active cooling
For denser builds — an NVR, a PoE switch and a UPS all drawing power and generating heat in the same enclosure — passive vents may not be enough. A fan kit or a location with better natural ventilation is worth considering in that case. Sealed outdoor IP-rated enclosures are a different case again: they typically need a fan or heater module sized to the internal heat load, which is a separate specification exercise from choosing an indoor wall-mount cabinet.
Where should cable glands and locks go, and does it need to be lockable?
Route cable entry through the base or rear of the cabinet, fitted with a proper gland or grommet — that's the short answer, and yes, it should be lockable. Plan the entry point away from the hinge line and never drill through the top or sides on installation day.
A rear or gland-plate entry lets you seal the cut edge and route cables clear of the door swing. It keeps the ingress path controlled rather than improvised with a spade bit on site. Cutting entry holes ad hoc is a common way a wall-mount cabinet ends up with an unsealed gap that later collects dust or damp.
